Threaded Fitting

Threaded stainless steel pipe fittings resist corrosion from caustic chemicals, corrosive fluids, oils, and gases, and withstand pressure and high temperatures in plumbing applications and food and dairy processing. Threaded pipe fittings are threaded on both connection ends. Female threads are on the inside of a fitting. Male threads are on the outside of a fitting and screw into the female threads. NPT (American National Standard Pipe Threads) and BSPT (British Standard Pipe Threads) threads are distinguishable by their thread taper angle. There are also straight (NPS) pipe thread fittings and metric (M) pipe fittings. Metric pipe fittings are identified by the nominal outside diameter and the thread pitch. These connections do not require glue or adhesive, but PTFE tape keeps seal tight. Threaded fittings come in a variety of sizes and shapes.

Definition and Use

Threaded fittings are commonly used connecting elements in piping systems, which realize a firm connection between pipes or piping accessories through the close fit of internal and external threads. Threaded fittings are widely used in a variety of low-pressure, non-critical fluid transmission systems, such as domestic water, fire fighting, industrial cooling water, and so on.

Types and Shapes

Threaded fittings come in a variety of shapes and types, including but not limited to:

Elbows

Used to change the direction of piping, common angles are 45°, 90° and 180°.

01

Tees

Used to branch out from the main pipe to another pipe, there are equal and reducer tees.

02

Tee

Similar to tee, but can branch out from the main pipe to two pipes.

03

Pipe Cap (End Cap)

Used to close the end of the pipe.

04

Plugs

Including square-head plugs, hexagonal-head plugs and round-head plugs, etc., used to seal the threaded ends of pipes or fittings.

05

Materials and Manufacturing

Threaded fittings are usually made from materials such as gray cast iron, malleable cast iron, stainless steel, brass, bronze, forged alloys and carbon steel. These materials have good mechanical properties and corrosion resistance to meet the needs of different piping systems.

The manufacturing process of threaded fittings includes steps such as forging, casting and thread machining. Among them, forging and casting are the main manufacturing processes, which can produce threaded fittings with complex shapes and precise dimensions. Thread machining is to machine internal and external threads on the fittings by turning, milling or grinding.

Connection and Sealing

Threaded fittings make connections between pipes or pipe accessories by means of threaded connections. During the connection process, a sealing material (e.g. Teflon tape or sealant) is used to ensure a tight connection. Correct installation and tightening torque are essential to ensure a tight threaded connection.

Advantages of Threaded Fitting

01/

The high strength of threaded fitting: According to the principle of cold work hardening of steel, the strength of the straight thread rolled on the steel bar is greatly improved, so that the tensile strength of the straight thread joint is higher than the tensile strength of the steel base material.

02/

Stable performance: The joint process is not affected by the quality of workers, so the performance is stable.

03/

Fast connection speed: Because methods of prefabricating off-site and assembling on-site are used, the prefabricated rebar can be stored in a large amount of prefabricated steel bar. When the construction period is tight, you only need to add assembly workers at the construction site.

04/

Wide range of application: There are basically no restrictions on the range of application, and threaded pipe for sale is more suitable for the field where bending steel bars, fixed steel bars, steel bar cages and other steel bars cannot rotate.

05/

Easy to manage: The threaded fitting like aluminum pipe nipple will not have a mismatch between the sleeve and the steel bar, and the inspection is more convenient. The operation is simple, and ordinary workers can become skilled workers after a few hours of study.

06/

Significant economic and social benefits: The use of threaded fitting shortens the construction period, improves the quality of the project, reduces energy consumption, is beneficial to environmental protection, reduces equipment investment, and has low additional costs. It has obvious economic and social benefits.

Precautions for Use Threaded Fitting

Clean the threads of fittings with a wire brush or cloth to remove any dirt, debris, or rust that may interfere with the sealing of the joint. Apply thread sealant to the male threads of the fitting. The sealant helps to lubricate the threads and prevent leaks.

Over-tightening can cause the fitting to crack or damage the pipe. Tighten the fitting until it is snug, and then use a wrench to turn it an additional 1/4 to 1/2 turn. Another option for sealing the threads is to use Teflon tape. Wrap the tape around the male threads of the fitting in a clockwise direction to prevent the tape from unraveling during installation. Once you have installed the fittings, test for leaks. Turn on the water or gas supply and check for any leaks. If you detect a leak, tighten the fitting a little more.

FAQ

Q: What is a threaded fitting?

A: Threaded fittings make a connection by attaching two threaded pieces, one male (where threads project on the outside of the fitting) and the other female (where threads are found inside the fitting). Male threads are inserted into female threads.

Q: What is the difference between threaded and flange?

A: While flanged connections offer strength, durability, and ease of maintenance for high-pressure and high-temperature applications, threaded connections provide a cost-effective and straightforward solution for smaller, low-pressure systems.

Q: What is the difference between welded and threaded fittings?

A: Strength and Reliability: Socket weld fittings offer superior strength and reliability due to welded connections, ensuring leak-proof seals. Threaded fittings, relying on threads, may be prone to leakage. Ease of Installation: Threaded fittings are easier to install, ideal for DIY projects and small-scale systems.

Q: What is the purpose of a threaded flange?

A: Threaded flanges are used where it is difficult to weld or cannot be welded, such as threaded flanges used to protect the galvanized layer of pipes. In addition, It should not be used on pipes with repeated temperature fluctuations or above 260 ℃ and below -45℃ as well.

Q: What are the different types of threaded couplings?

A: They have female or male threads of different kinds: BSP, BSPT, NPT, NPS, metric, ACME, DIN11. Depending on the type of the thread, the connection comes with a flat seal, it is sealed on the cone (metal-metal) or on the thread (with PTFE thread seal tape, liquid or paste sealant).

Q: What are threaded fittings used mainly on?

A: Threaded Fittings are extensively used in residential & commercial plumbing systems, especially for water and gas pipelines. Their ease of use makes them an excellent choice for agricultural irrigation networks & sprinkler systems.

Q: What is the ASME standard for threaded fittings?

A: It is the standard for the forged steel fittings, including socket weld and threaded type. Material including carbon steel, alloy steel and stainless steel. Also described as Class 2000, 3000, 6000 threaded end fittings and Class 3000, 6000, and 9000 for socket weld end fittings.
