Stainless Steel Flange

Definition and Usage

Stainless steel flange, as a kind of flange, is mainly made of stainless steel, which is a part of the mutual connection between shafts, usually used for the connection between pipe ends and the connection between the import and export of equipments, such as the speed reducer flange. It is widely used in construction, light and heavy industry, plumbing, electric power and other fields, especially in the need to withstand greater pressure and corrosive environment.

Classification and Characteristics

Classification

According to the connection method, stainless steel flanges can be divided into plate flat welding flanges, necked flat welding flanges, necked butt welding flanges, socket welding flanges, threaded flanges, flange covers and so on.
According to the pressure level, stainless steel flanges have a wide range of pressure levels, such as 0.6Mpa32Mpa, 150Lb2500Lb and so on.

Features

Corrosion resistance: Due to the excellent corrosion resistance of stainless steel material, stainless steel flanges are able to resist the erosion of many chemical media.
High strength: Stainless steel flanges have high strength and can withstand greater pressure.
Easy Connection: Flange connection is a convenient and fast connection, through the cooperation of bolts and gaskets, it can realize fast and firm connection.

Material and Manufacturing

The main material of stainless steel flanges is stainless steel, and the specific grades include ASTM A182 F304, 304L, F316, 316L, 1Cr18Ni9Ti, 0Cr18Ni9Ti and so on. These materials have different corrosion resistance and mechanical properties, and can be selected according to the specific use environment.

In the manufacturing process, stainless steel flanges need to go through forging, casting, welding and other process steps. Forged flanges have high strength and toughness, and are suitable for high pressure, high temperature and other harsh environments; casting flanges have lower manufacturing costs and are suitable for general occasions. Welded flanges, on the other hand, connect the flanges with pipes or equipment by welding, which has greater flexibility and adaptability.

Installation Requirements of Stainless Steel Flange

Prior to installation, ensure that flange surfaces are impeccably smooth and clean. Thoroughly remove any oil stains and rust spots.

Opt for gaskets boasting exceptional oil resistance, aging resistance, elasticity, and mechanical strength. Tailor gasket selection based on joint shape, ensuring proper installation. When welding stainless steel flanges, meticulously control welding current to prevent flange overheating, which could compromise performance.

Distribute tightening force evenly across stainless steel flanges, with gasket tightening kept within an appropriate range, typically around 1/3 of the flange pressure. Enhance flange stability by incorporating suitable stabilizing components.

Production Process of Stainless Steel Flange

The production workshop shall select appropriate raw materials for blanking according to the process requirements. Before heating, the surface of the materials must be checked. If there are visible cracks, folds, inclusions and other defects, they must be removed by peeling or other removal methods before being allowed to enter the furnace for heating.

For forging, the principle of light hitting with small deformation and heavy hitting after plasticity is improved is adopted. And forge in the form of square, polygon and square. If cracks or other defects are found on the surface during forging, they shall be timely reported to the quality inspector and technologist for reasonable removal and treatment. During upsetting, the upper and lower ends shall be chamfered or the circumference shall be blanked first, and then the blank shall be laid flat and pasted with a heavy blow. The blank shall rotate continuously around its axis to make uniform deformation. When the blank section is large, “pressing iron” can be used for flattening and upsetting.

After forging of stainless steel (1Cr18Ni9Ti) flange, in order to prevent intergranular corrosion, improve plasticity, eliminate work hardening and obtain the best corrosion resistance, heat treatment must be carried out, usually solution treatment. Heat the forging to 1050 ° C-10,709 ° C to dissolve all carbides in austenite, and then rapidly cool it to obtain single-phase austenite structure to improve its stress corrosion resistance and crystal corrosion resistance.

FAQ

Q: What is a stainless steel flange?

A: Stainless steel flanges are an essential component of pipes and tubes, which helps to connect them. They are circular disks with concentric ridges or projections on their surface that help to grip the pipes and tubes tightly. Stainless steel flanges are highly durable and can withstand high pressure and temperature.

Q: Do stainless steel flanges rust?

A: Stainless steel is corrosion-resistant due to the addition of chromium, the source of the thin oxide layer at the material's surface. This passive layer protects the material, but corrosion and rust still may occur if the protective layer is damaged.

Q: What grade is stainless steel flange material?

A: Flanges made of stainless steel are referred to as "stainless steel 304 flanges," also abbreviated as "SS 304 flange." Common material standards and grades include ASTM A182 Grade F304/L and F316/L, with pressure ratings ranging from Class 150 to 2500 and 300 to 600, respectively.

Q: How do you remove rust from a flange?

A: The most common methods for repairing corroded flanges include cleaning, sandblasting, and coatings. Cleaning involves the removal of surface contaminants, such as dirt, grease, and rust, using a wire brush or a high-pressure water jet.

Q: How are stainless steel flanges made?

A: Flanges are manufactured using three main techniques: casting, cutting from rolled plate material, or forging. No matter the technique, the basic flange production includes processing raw materials, then forming them to the appropriate specifications.

Q: What are three flange types?

A: The most common flange types are: Welding Neck Flange. Slip-on Flange. Socket Weld Flange.

Q: What is the material code for stainless steel flange?

A: For stainless steel pipe flange, common use material is ASTM A182 F304/L and F316/L. ASTM A182: It refers to forged and rolled alloy and stainless steel pipe flanges, fittings, valves and parts for high temperature service.
